Game crashes when graphics card temperatures rise above 90 degrees C

Hi,

I have been facing this issue for quite some time now. I have a MSI R9 280X 3G and being using it for the past 3 years. In recent times, I found out that my GC temperatures were rising quickly to the 80 degrees mark and more often around the 90 degrees C mark. Once the temperatures rise above 90C, the game crashes. And it happens with every game.

Did a lot of research, and logically decided that probably the thermal paste might have been dried up (since I have been using it for 3 years now). Got the cooler out, removed the old paste and replace it with new paste (Cooler master V1 IC value). But still the issue persisted when temps rised above 90C.

I was wondering if there is any kind of a setting in AMD Crimson (currently using 16.7.2) or on the motherboard bios to set the limit of temperatures. But I couldn't find any.

My rig:
Intel i5 2400 (Cooler Master Hyper 212X on it)
MSI R9 280X 3G
Intel DZ68DB mobo
12 GB ADATA RAM
Corsair 600GS PSU
One front and 2 side intakes, 1 rear exhaust
Windows 10 Professional 64 bit

Also note: I did try to revert to older driver versions (15.7) but the issues still persisted.

Kindly help.

Have you tried using MSI Afterburner to set your fans manually? Change your fan curve, so that the fans kick in earlier and with higher RPM? https://gaming.msi.com/features/afterburner

Your fins are free of dust?

Hi,

Yes. I did try MSI afterburner. Set the fan speed at 80% and faced the same issue. Should my fans be running at 100% ?

Thanks,

100% power 100% of the time? No, that shouldn't be necessary. Sounds as if it may be time to upgrade from that rebranded 7970.

If you are feeling brave you could try https://rumorscity.com/2013/12/12/msi-r9-280x-bios-update-to-fix-overheating-and-vrm-temperatures/ Yes, you could brick your card.

Hi,

The bios mentioned on the link is already present on my MSI R9 280X. Better thermal paste, maybe ?

[Update]...Well so I decided to go ahead and replace the thermal paste on the GPU. The card is now not getting hotter than 75 degrees.

But the strange thing is that I had to replace the thermal paste within a month. Is there a specific thermal paste I need to use for GPU ? I am currently using Cooler Master V1 IC value. Maybe the pastes which do not dry up quickly and provide better performance. ?
