OS: Windows 7 64-bit Home PC: HP TouchSmart 520 I'd give more information, but since my hard drive has failed, I'm not able to obtain much more. It's a SATA hard drive by the way.

Well, I was attempting to upgrade my PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and YES, my PC is Windows 10 ready. After the download and during the preparation to install Windows 10, my PC suddenly gave me a BSOD (Kernal Inpage Error, I believe, it was really fast so I could be wrong), and when my PC restarted, my hard drive had failed. And now, sometimes the BIOS recognizes the hard drive, sometimes it does not. Either way, once I attempt to boot from the hard drive, it does not work regardless. My system still works fine and I'm able to access the HP settings. Diagnostics stated that my hard drive had either failed or is not recognized. I attempted a system restore, and attempted to run a system repair disc, but of course neither worked because the hard drive does not work. I even attempted to install WINDOWS 2000 (I know, old right? It was the last OS I ever owned on disc, all other computers I've owned have come with Windows 7 preloaded), but of course, I could not install Windows 2000 because the hard drive had failed.

I've contacted Microsoft support several times, but mostly to no avail, accept for one agent who provided me with a Windows 7 64-bit .iso file to attempt a clean installation. I did not believe such was possible without a working hard drive, but the agent claimed it may still be possible because I can still access the Boot Menu and HP Settings. I put the .iso on USB and attempted to run it, but of course, nothing happened. When attempting to boot from the USB, all that would display was a flashing underscore symbol (_, I'm sure there's a better way to say that, I'm not completely as savvy as others), which to me obviously means the clean installation cannot run without a working hard drive to save it to.

My next step, if I don't have any other solutions, is to go to a local Best Buy Geek Squad and have the hard drive replaced, even though I don't really want to fork over that much money, and I honestly don't care if my hard drive data is recovered, I just want my PC up and running again on Windows 7, because obviously the biggest mistake here was attempting to upgrade to Windows 10.

But before I do that, any other solutions? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

First you would need to diagnose the drive and make sure it really is failing.

Is your HP TouchSmart 520 still under warranty? If so, then get it to local HP warranty support provider. They will replace the drive for free.

If warranty is over, then you can fiddle with it yourself.
Can you remove the drive from HP TouchSmart 520 and attach it to some other working desktop computer?

Honestly, I know that. I do believe the upgrade was the final straw for my hard drive, which means it was probably going to fail anyway. But it was still the death blow. It seems like replacing the drive may be the only solution, but I'm looking for any other solution before doing that.
