The motherboard is a M3N78 Pro, a bit old but still functional. I am going to update the bios since I will be changing the CPU from an AMD Athlon dual core to a quad core. Using ASUS's site, I downloaded the recommended bios update. I have followed the directions using the EZ Flash utility, tried different flash drives, checked the drive format (tested both FAT and FAT32) and unplugged the computer to clear the CMOS. I also changed the ROM file name to various configurations in an attempt to clear the problem:

'no boot signature found in file'

I have received this message consistently.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

No. Your reply is to the correct page which led to the download of the correct bios. Tho my download was based on the processor and an M3N78 mobo, something was not correct.

While the bios downloaded correctly, I subsequently encountered issues with booting the computer. I believe the problems may have been related to the returning the bios to standard per the bios installation directions I was following. Ultimately I bought a new hard disk and reinstalled windows 7 to have a functional computer again. I will reinstall the old hard disks and attempt to recover the data. These disks are older than 10 years and may have contributed to my problems.

Again, thank you for the reply which ultimately led to correcting the bios installation and an upgrade from a 2 core cpu to a 4 core cpu.
