Hello.

I've been recently experiencing overheating problems on my CPU and decided to update my MOBO's BIOS(a Gigabyte Z97M-D3H) after reading a few things, the BIOS version was at F3 and after the update it went to F8. However, after the BIOS was updated the computer freezes on every start up screen(Be it from my SSD, USB Flash when trying to reinstall windows or Windows Repair) the numlock in the keyboard flashes together with Capslock and Scroll before being turned off permanently(until a next boot that is)

I'm currently using Windows 7 64-bit and I'd really appreciate any help with this issue, below are some of the solutions I've tried.

  • Changing the "boot type"(From AHCI to IDE)
Resetting everything back to default on the setup screen
Unplugging the HDD and keeping only the SSD
Flashing the BIOS to the currently installed version from the setup screen via USB.
Clearing CMOS with the jumper on the mobo
Taking out RAMs, GPUs and hard drives.

It's worth noting the computer can successfully boot in safe mode.

Try a clear CMOS using the actual jumper on the board. It's always recommended to do so after an upgrade. After doing so, double check the motherboard manufacturers website for updated drivers for your boards components too. You made a big jump. Chances are there's other updates drivers that go along with it.

I can't really update my drivers in safe mode, most of the executables don't work.

Tried the CMOS clearing but I still freeze on start up :c

Roll back man. Don't sweat having the absolute latest BIOS if its causing you issues. You should have your 2nd BIOS which is probably on your old version, boot in to Windows, make sure all windows updates are installed and upgrade every driver on the manufacturer site, then shut down, flip the BIOS switch back to the new BIOS and boot to see if it makes a difference. You've also got Q Flash so you can upgrade/downgrade the BIOS without needing to get in to windows.

I've been trying in several different ways to switch to the second BIOS that gigabyte claims my MOBO has but they've all been unsuccessful, the user manual also doesn't state a clear way to switch BIOS on this MOBO. :x

(from F7 onwards it makes it impossible for the MOBO to be reverted to older versions so I'm scared of trying to rollback with a Q-Flash)

Can you flash to F7 from within the BIOS and see if it helps? Even if you brick your mobo you're not gonna lose any data off your hard drives unless you're using chipset RAID then there's some risk.

I did a little poking around google and believe it or not, you might just have a bad RAM stick. Try removing all RAM and leaving just one stick in the primary slot and see if you get stability. If not, swap in another stick. Gotta see if one of those sticks is the culprit. Computer freezing is VERY often RAM related.

I'm more worried about the MOBO than my data so flashing back to F7 before actually managing to use the dualbios thingy is out of question.

I don't see why the RAM would be related to this when the computer can boot in Safe Mode but sure, let me do that, will edit this post with results.

EDIT: Yeah, tried taking out every piece I could, RAMs, GPU(On-board video works like it should btw, still freezes obviously) HDD and SSD... Nothing has an effect on this. I truly think F8 isn't compatible with something that's required to both boot a USB OS setup and windows outside of safe mode
