Asus ez flash hangs with filesystem present

I have an Asus z170-k, on which I tried to run BIOS update via ez flash 3.
The first part went smoothly, and asked me to reboot to finish the update. The problem is that after reboot, if there's a filesystem (both usb and hdd) that ez flash can detect (ntfs, fat), the program hangs with black screen. However, if there's a drive with no filesystem or a system that ez flash cannot detecet (ext4 for instance), then I can load the update utility itself, but I can't update bexause it doesn't see the file system.
I took out discrete vga card, cleared cmos - didn't help.
Trying to update through network says my bios has already been updated, though I am forced into ez flash on every boot. If I try to exit ez flash, everything stops responding until a hard reset.
Any suggestions for a workaround? I'm not sure what to do now qith this almost-working mobo.

I did have problems with it, though.
Other than that, it's kinda late for that. At this point I need to find a fix for an already existing problem.
