Looking for some advice and maybe other user's experience on upgrading to Win10.

I don't have a backup drive large enough for all the stuff I have on my PC currently so I was wondering whether just updating is viable?

I update my 2 pc's for win 10 and there is no problem... I also installed a clean w10 on my main pc.

So there is no problem going to update, but remember that an clean install is better so when you will able to copy your stuff, re-instal the windows with an clean install.

So can I just update now and do a clean install at a later date if I feel it's necessary?

Also with the plain update did you run into any issues gaming-wise?

Yes, you can do it latter...

No issues at all realy... Just need to reinstall some old games but they run after re-install with no problem. The old games I'm talking about are realy old games... 2002-2004.

Windows 10 has a few features that I really like and one of them is the ability to do a clean install without having to actually reinstall it.
Say you 'upgrade' from Windows 7 to 10 and you find that the upgrade did not go so smoothly and you want to clean install.
Go to 'update & security' and select the 'recovery panel' then 'reset this pc'.
From there you can choose to a full reset that's just like you've done a clean install.

Why don't you create and image of you current system. An image is a compressed backup. There are free imaging software out there and external drives are cheap now.

New system build: What version of windows do I need to purchase, if I want to ultimately have Windows 10 Pro.

My understanding is you MUST upgrade from a prior Windows, no, yes ?

Thank you
