Like the title says my i7-4790k is hitting 80c under load.
My cooler is a corsair h55 and the case is a cooler master haf x.
I've tried dusting it and reapplying thermal paste. It made it go down from 90-97c under load to 80+

I don't hear anything loud enough to be sure it's my cooler but i did hear something along the lines of bubbles popping a few days ago.

Currently the cooler is connected to the motherboard, would connecting it to the psu possibly make a difference?

No, it must be connected to the motherboard.

37-38c idle is fine. However, CS-GO should never cause a i7-4790k to hit 80c+, as the CPU should still practically be idling.

Do you still have the stock cooler? If so why not try it instead of the h55 to see if it makes a difference?

And you do not have another PC in which you can test the h55? Without another CPU cooler its difficult to provide guidance as we need to eliminate the cooler as the cause. Maybe you can borrow a cooler from someone? A gaming friend of yours who kept his stock cooler?

Unfortunately the only other cooler im able to get my hands on is a stock cooler for a AMD A6-6420k black edition.

OK, there is a possibility that it might fit if you use the extra mounting brackets for the h55. It is worth a shot. If the temps are a lot lower then you know that it it the h55 which is faulty.
