I'm thinking of buying a laptop with an SSD boot drive and a separate HD. If I have extra space on the SSD boot drive, can I also use it to store data/files?

You're welcome.
You mention you'll be purchasing a laptop with the SSD and a HDD. Is the laptop you're considering equipped with two drive bays so that it can accommodate two drives? Or will you be using the HDD as an external USB device?

Sure. It's a Dell Alienware 15. I'm not buying it for gaming, but instead want to use the high end processor and graphics card for faster, smoother processing of large raw digital photographs and video. I also have the option of getting a 1 TB SSD boot drive in combination with a 1 TB HD. I haven't seen the combination of all of these features anywhere else at the price that Alienware is offering.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into that Dell.
Since we frequently have occasion to work with multiple OSs we have an interest in 2-bay machines when working with laptops since it can give us the capability of booting to two different OSs. (We're aware of installing a "caddy" to mount a drive in the laptop's optical drive compartment but we prefer not to lose the use of an optical drive. Also, we've run into problems booting to a drive containing a viable OS mounted in the caddy.)
