how to access files on external hdd from dvr

the digital video recorder stopped working. so i removed the hard disk, bought an enclosure to convert from sata to usb and plugged it on my windows 8 laptop.
the message am getting is that i need to format it to start working on it. i cant see any file .
help

It's not a simple fix here. DVRs don't use any traditional computer file system. Most are totally proprietary. While there are a few who will provide a program you can use to read the video data, most don't make it readily available.
