Hi just wondering if anyone can help with a problem I'm having.

I go from having a smooth and steady FPS in games such as 60+, when I alt tab for a period of time to browse the internet or whatever and then alt tab back into the game, this seems to cause my FPS to significantly drop to around 12.

Restarting the game doesn't fix it I either have to restart my PC or another method I've recently found is changing from full screen to windowed full screen, then back to full screen will put my FPS back to normal.

I've been having this problem since "Tom Clancy's The Division" came out, which was also the same time a new NVIDIA driver came out, which I thought might have been the problem. I have tried rolling back to previous drivers but the problem still persists.

I have linked my dxdiag below if it is of any help.

Thanks for your time and any help is much appreciated.

Does it only happen on Division or other games as well. What is likely happening is the game may have a memory leak, so the memory that was addressed is not being released so when you go back into the game its short on memory, or the games processes are not going back to being the priority task.

This may be an issue with the driver but most likely its in the game code. Does this happen with other games?

Two other things to try also, if you then alt-tab out and back in again does it clear up. And can you check your Nvidia settings to ensure power management is set to Max Performance.

It also happens in a lot of other games as well, Ill check the power settings and next time it occurs try alt tab out and back in again to see if it fixes it though thanks.

Changed my NVIDIA power management to Max performance and proceeded to play a game, upon alt tabbing to check something on the internet and then tabbing back into the game my FPS had dropped significantly again from a steady 50+ to around 6-12fps. alt tabbing the game back out and in again also had no effect and my previous temporary solution of changing the game from fullscreen to windowed-fullscreen and back will no longer work. I had to restart my computer in order to regain my normal framerate in games.

Ive tried rolling back to many different drivers before the problems started occurring and tried updating to newer ones, different drivers don't seem have much of an effect.

I'm pretty sure it happens on all games, whether they have low or high system requirements. Ill try testing a few more games now though after changing NVIDIA power management.

Its hard to test the problem as it is quite random when it occurs, but I went through the process of loading up some games and then alt tabbing for a while. the division seemed fine, rocket league seemed fine. Both games I'm pretty sure I had the problem with in the past. starpoint gemini 2 had fps drop and world of Warcraft had fps drop, But I have never had the fps drop problem when alt tabbing with world of Warcraft in the past.

it may also be that the problem is still there with rocket league and division but I may have not tested it enough and been lucky it didn't occur as its quite random.

When you alt-tab away, your GPU is dropping to its 2D clocks, then failing to ramp back up again. Send a message to nVidia, this is a BUG; the driver is failing to detect that you're back in a 3D game. I'm surprised that exiting and restarting the game doesn't fix it; try exiting, loading any other program, then loading the game (you're just making sure memory allocation is different / has to be re-done).

Haven't had any problems for a while so hopefully the problem is fixed, fingers crossed.

Spoke to NVIDA customer support and basically was given a link to download the latest driver from the site then follow these steps below.

Once the download is completed, please perform the following steps:

1.Run the installation
2.Choose custom installation, and click next.
3.Check all the boxes in the custom install options windows and also check the box which states "Perform clean install"..
4.Restart your computer.

After that, please make the settings as below;

1.Go to NVIDIA control panel > 3 D settings > manage 3 D settings.
2.Program settings > add the .exe file of the game > set the power management mode to prefer maximum performance.
3.vertical sync- off
4 .Click on Apply, close the control panel, launch the game and check if it helps.

If anyone ever does come by this on google one day, I believe I figured out whats causing the lag. The day after I had a windows update for windows 10, it reset my audio devices. I remembered I had lag from audio a long time ago in windows 7 as well.

Go to your Playback Sounds tab and make sure you do not have 2 Audio devices enabled at once. As weird as it sounds, it can cause terrible lag issues.

Hope this helps someone <3
