LOW FPS for Games on New Hardware

Hi All,

I bought myself a desktop a week ago - The Acer Aspire T3-710-UR51. It's got 8 GB of DDR 3 RAM, Intel i5-6400, 2 TB of HDD with Windows 10 Home edition and 600W EVGA PSU.

I've installed my own PSU and my Graphic card - Zotac GTX 970.

Earlier i was using the Sandy Bridge -5 3750 processor with 8 GB of RAM. When i used to run my games on it, it used to run flawlessly. But now when i run my games on this spec, i get sub par FPS. Also, for certain games the FPS drops by like 10 FPS mid game.

For example, on Witcher 3, with everything on max (except Foliage and Shadows), i would get a constant 60 FPS even in the cities on my old build, but over here in the cities it always on an average around 48 FPS. Similarly, for Shadow of Mordor, when i run the in game benchmark, in my old build i used to get an average of 90 FPS every time, but now, the first time i run the benchmark i get 84 FPS and the second time onwards it hovers around 74 FPS.

I've tried the following things:

1. Overclocked GPU, but that's no use - same issue
2. Checked CPU usage - it's around 90% when i'm playing a game
3. RAM - used only 50%
4. GPU - used up to 98%
5. Ran a scan for Malware - nothing
6. Ran a scan for viruses - nothing
7. Rest my Windows 10 - didn't help

The things i did notice are that the Power usage, Voltage usage graph in MSI afterburner showed ups and down constantly. I would assume that it's supposed to be constant while playing, but the graph shows periodic ups and down.

Can someone help?

Thanks.

Ramesh

If it is throttling temp wise then it wont go past the 2.7GHz clock speed. That means there is a 700MHz clock speed difference between the CPUs and depending on what resolution you are playing at it can limit it.

I was just putting in a possible reason as to why since again, the 3570 has a higher base speed than the 6400s maximum single core turbo speed.
Well for one you downgraded your CPU. The i5 6400 has a base speed of 2.7GHz with a turbo of up to 3.3GHz, depending on active cores, while the i5 3570 (I assume that's what you meant) has a base speed of 3.4GHz with a turbo boost to 3.8GHz depending on the number of active cores. The i5 3570 is faster stock than the i5 6400 is on its best turbo, which is probably when only one core is active.

That could easily be the answer to your problems. While there is three generations between the i5 3570 and i5 6400 there is not that massive of a performance upgrade, hence why there are still a lot of people with i5 2500Ks/2600K/2700K CPUs that wont upgrade as there is not enough of a benefit, especially when overclocked.

Well i forgot to mention that Hairworks is off in the Witcher 3 and yet i get those Frames Per second (average 48). On the old hardware it used be a solid 60 with the same settings, but something seems weird here, I'm going to check the CPU temps shortly. With respect to the Processor, i don't think there's a big between the two in terms of performance, so yeah don't see why there'd be such a huge gap (nearly 12 FPS difference).

It also doesn't explain the drop in FPS in certain games such as Shadow of Mordor.

Witcher 3 is quite demanding, but it is not very CPU clock speed dependent.

Do you possibly have hairworks turned on? Are you sure your settings are exactly the same as they were on the old setup?

Hi - so I have turned off hairworks and yet the fps is the same. I rest my win 10 today. Did a full reset and installed shadow of mordor. The first time I ran the in game benchmark it gave me a score of 93 fps Avg which is what I used to get on my old hardware.. The CPU usage was normal as well. However the fps gradually dropped after every single test. After the 5th test my average fps was 78 fps. This doesn't make much sense to me now.
