Windows activation key not working for windows .iso download

Hello,

my disc is slowly dying and recently my Win7 went away, i've been living in safe mode for a while but today, i decided to repair it, so i tried to create a bootable usb device to boot windows from, but i ran into a problem. When i try to download the .iso file from the official microsoft website, when i enter my activation key, after a while a message pops up and says something like: "We ran into a problem with your request for the verification."
Is my key not working because i've already activated my original windows 7 with it? Or is the key not working at all in the first place? Or can i get fully functional Win7 from somewhere else?

You do need a license key, but you can use an existing Win 7/8/8.1 license with a clean Win 10 install.

It is NOT illegal to download a full .iso windows installer as long as it's the same veraion you had, so you can do that (you have to activate with your key afterwards, and that's the part that makes it 'genuine')
The problem is that you would be downloading from an unoffficial source, so you have to be quite careful.

It's not working because you have an OEM license for Win 7.
Microsoft expects you to get the install media from your manufacturer.

If you want, you can skip Win 7 & 8, and go straight to Win 10.

Yes, if your Activation Key has already been used, then that's a good enough reason for it to be invalid here. Get Windows 10. It's free and (though I am not certain) you shouldn't need an activation key. Good luck!

So does he need a license for 7/8 to get 10? Or are you saying he can get 10 and then type in the old registration and activate it with that?

Bolded part = Yes.
His existing Windows 7 license key can be used with a new clean install of Win 10. This became possible with the Nov 2015 release.
