Router NETGEAR WNDR3400v2 N600 Dual Band -- latest firmware
Windows 10 - All up to date
Surface Book Pro - I followed the Microsoft instructions on how to check but no help
I.E. no airplane mode is not on, yes WIFI is on ETC.

I have all security turned off... no WEP or password, no access control
I have cleared the WIFI on the Book... does not show my Network as known
Ran the self help troubleshooter - no good
I connected another device to my Network with no problem
I connected the Book to a Cafe network and it was good

What am I missing?

30 seconds plus will default these also hopefully you werent using "wep" wpa2 is what you want, wep is only for wireless g and lower so there is a possibility it was running in a wireless g mode even without the password and the laptop didn't like that.

also some devices by default will use the "300+" etc mbps on 2.4 which is horrible as it overlaps other frequencies generally causing connection issues and slower speeds.

at least it is now working for you
so it shows it but you cannot connect ?

I would find out what adapter it is using and find a new driver for it.

but removing the device in device manager and re installing it may help. dont remove the driver just the device then maybe give it a reboot or his scan for changes up top

Good one, I did not try this,

"removing the device in device manager and re installing it may help. dont remove the driver just the device then maybe give it a reboot or his scan for changes up top"

But, did not work.

"If you go to an open WiFi place (Starbucks, McDonnalds etc), or disable (temporary) WiFi seciruty on your router -can you connect?"

Yes I can connect on "public" networks, I.E. McD it works, local Cafe ETC.

At home with all security off, it does not... I.E. I have WEP OFF including PW as well as, access control is turned off.

WEIRD!

I ended up just ditching it and getting a Nighthawk. Everything works fine now.

One more weird thing... the original router, when I pushed the reset button on the back (yes for 5+ seconds) it never did a factor reset.
