Hi im looking to add a video card to a desktop pc to run some games, this is the first time I do this and I have limited to no knowledge about graphics cards, other than checking that the card is compatible with the motherboard, what should I be looking at to make a good purchase.
I saw some guides that recommend looking at the power of the card and the number in the title.

Solution
We will need a little more info.

An i5 could be an i5-6500 or an i5 750. One is good to go with any GPU, the other is time to replace.
Can you let us know what your power supply is? Brand, model, and output wattage would be best.

I want to play old games mostly, but it would be nice to have a card that can play more recent games too.
I dont have the processor model right now but is an intel i5, but is a decent processor with a decent memory 8 GB ram
The monitor supports HD , im not looking for 4k or anything too fancy though as long as the game look good and something comparable to an xbox 360 or ps3 is fine (for the more recent games)
