No, the sockets are different (e.g. a 4th gen i3 (indicated by the first number being 4) will fit in an LGA 1150 socket but a 6th gen will require an LGA 1151). You need to check which socket the i3 in question supports, and get a matching motherboard.

Motherboard pin layouts (sockets) and chipsets change from generation to generation, so you would have to buy a motherboard compatible with your specific i3. If you tell us the full name we should able to give you which chipset and socket it's compatible with.
