Hey so I'm thinking of making a PC, first time doing so.

Need to upgrade since my computer is ancient, so I looked online and my friend said this build was good, but he wasn't sure if all the parts were compatible.

http://funnyjunk.com/channel/pc-building/The+1000+intel+quality+build/tnNcLga/

He said the CPU and RAM may not be compatible with the motherboard, and I haven't received a response yet from the guy who made that build. I would still like a second opinion even if he did answer it, though.

Thanks for any help!

The only thing from that build I'd use is the case and PSU, but there's no reason to pay that kind of money for already outdated hardware. And that info about RAM is incorrect. All you have to do is make sure the voltages and pins match, speeds and timings are controlled by the motherboard. This is what you should buy for your budget:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($238.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($43.53 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI Z170A GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($169.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory...

Unfortunately I am Canadian, but I think I can still afford that.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I haven't found any listings for a 1060...do you mean 1080 or something else?

No the GTX 1060 is a new card that hasn't been released yet. It's a mid range card designed to replace the GTX 960 and will retail somewhere between the $250 - $280 range depending on manufacturer.
