Hi, new to posting but been reading for ages - thanks for all the info over the years guys!

Right, my question - and I know you get like 20 a day of these but...... - what GPU should I buy?!

I am upgrading my 5yo PC with a bunch of new bling but I can not decide on GPU. Spec below:
I5-6600k that I will overclock quite a bit
ASRock motherboard
SSD drive
700w quad rail power (from my existing case / power set-up)
16gb DDR4 ram - I was planning to auto-overclock these

For Monitors I currently use 2 x BenQ E2220HD which are 1080p with 5ms response.

I can let you have details of anything else if needed but these are the main bits. I play a mix of strategy games like total war and FPS like doom, titanfall etc. I don't do a lot of multiplayer games but sometimes a bit of battlefront, dawn of war, titanfall.

So at the moment I have a GTX 460 with an I5 760 overclocked. I have literally upgraded nothing but drivers over last 5 years and have been so impressed with GTX460 and nvidia generally.

So first thought was thought was a GTX970 to stick with my NVidia love. But then I got reading and started to warm up to an R9 390x - currently available with free TW: warhammer which will save me £40. Then I got excited about the new 480x and perhaps starting with one of these and then looking at 2x in crossfire down the road if I upgrade my monitors to 4k (only a matter of time........).

But now I'm reading the2x 480x crossfire probably wont be as good as a single GTX1070....so Im really not sure what to do! I'm starting to edge back towards my original plan of R9 390x. I'm not bothered about power or case cooling - never been an issue in the past and I think the 700w power should be fine. But would a 1070 be better future proofed for 4k? or would the 2x 480x make more sense for that.

Thoughts?!

Thanks Matt

For gaming at 1080P a GTX970 class card will play most anything well.
A GTX1060 would likely do the job for you now.
But, if you ever wanted to upgrade to 1440P or triple monitor gaming then something stronger like a GTX1070 or possibly GTX1080 would be in order.
I just read a review of RX480 crossfire.

If you go by FPS statistics, it sounds good.
Looking at the frame time analysis, not so good.
Gameplay is always better with a good single card.
GTX1070 will play many games decently at 4k.
If you can afford it, buy a GTX1080. I have never regretted paying more for the top card.
If you don't, you will forever wonder if you should have.

why do you complicate so much ask your self 2 simple questions How much you can spend and how strong gpu do you want

ATM the Best GPU is 1080
after it comes 1070
after it comes 980ti
then furyX
then 390x
980
390 and so on

why do you want o spend on 390X when its soo much slower then 1070 and its almsot the smae price range

Not all people are aware of new GPU's :p

Thanks for thoughts guys. Been offline few days building new machine - all working well I'm pleased to say, but still with old GTX460.

So back to my dilemma.......

Basically I agree that if price is no object then 1080 clearly the way to go, or 1070 if can't stretch to 1080.

But..... 1070 is sooooo expensive compared to the RX 480. The RX 480 will almost certainly cover my needs until I go to 1440p gaming, which frankly wont be any time soon since I bust my budget on the build so far. with the aftermarket RX480's starting to appear I'm thinking I will just start with one of those. If / when I go to 1440p I can always upgrade to 1080 (selling the 480) or get another 480 if the drivers are working better for crossfire. I've dropped ideas of old gen AMD or NVidia. I just can't see the sense in this.

Thanks for help
