I built a new system but retained my GTX 770 and it is somewhat aging. I painstakingly researched monitors and decided to upgrade my 1440p 27" to a 32" super-wide 3440x1440 that just happened to have freesync. I didn't really care one way or the other, was looking at staying under $700 for a good monitor and the wide-screen was intriquing.

Now, I am beginning to wonder if instead of upgrading to a 1070, I shouldn't hold out for a rx490 or whatever the upper-end AMD card will be this year just to make use of the freesync. I have seen several arguments here back and forth, some saying it's the same as a 970, some saying it's like a 980, some saying it's not as good as either. Many of them are based on 1080p gaming though.

So I thought I'd ask, and detail what I want to game with. I play in the resolution noted above, 3440x1440 at 60hz. I do Elder Scrolls online, some earlier RPG titles and I plan to move through the entire Witcher series (just began witcher 1.) I will invest in single player RPG games in the future, and I have no real interest in VR right now.

My rig is a 6700k with 16gb ram, a G1 Gigabyte z170 board.

Is freesync that big of a deal that I should look at AMD offerings and wait, or should I just forget about it and grab a 1070 now? I want to AVOID Crossfire if at all possible.

the rx480 is about a oc 970 depending on game but not the 980ti yet. but there are new data showing Vulkan on doom with a good 15-20% fps + on the rx480. keep in mind that doom work with AMD very closely so other game may not have that kinda fps gain.
if you look at the R9 380 and the 390. the RX480 should work the same with the RX490. both price and speed. the RX490 should come out Q4? or Q1 next year?

the 1070 will kick the RX480 ass in every single way but price and won't have SLI support. so if you are to get one card and won't do Crossfire/SLI. i would go for the 1070 or 1080 or 1060 (should be a bit faster than rx480 and 980ti) or RX490 depending how much are you willing to spend on a GPU. but if you will be thinking of...

I wouldn't recommend AMD GPU last year caz of their support. but giving the way they deal with the RX480 power over draw. "they fix the problem within a week". and seem like they start to care about their customer again? so i think AMD maybe a go for the the time being.
