Hello. I wanted to use my old HP pc's hard drive and put it in a new build. I know that OEM windows licenses might not work. I was going to use the media creation tool to put windows ten on a usb and use it to install windows when I move the hard drive. What do I need to do so the hard drive will work on the new computer and install windows and all. I don't mind my data being gone. I just need help understanding how to erase and or format the hard drive.

Well the windows 10 install itself will give you the tools you need and it is pretty simple to follow, if you are fine with all the data being destroyed the easiest is to choose the advanced install. Then when the drive selection is listed just delete all the partitions until the only option left is to install windows on the large un partitioned space. It will then go through the process of partitioning, formatting and installing windows on that drive.

What OS do you have?
Was the OS preinstalled on the HP?
If so, it is an OEM license, and probably will not work for that new PC. So you'll need to actually buy Win 10 for this new build.

Your's is the best answer but I accidentally clicked it. Do you think you can help with one more question? So to get it ready to move the drive to new pc, do I just take out it out and put it into new one; or do I have to do something before that? If I take drive from pc2 to pc1, and take another drive from pc3 to pc2, will that work? How will I have windows again since the oem windows 7 from pc2 will be gone. Thanks for the help!

Hello moderator? Yes the Win 7 is preinstalled on the computer, so I've read it won't work on the new pc. But I have a question that I asked pingu_z. So here's the scenario. I have win vista on pc3. I have win 7 on pc2. I'm taking hard drive from pc2 to new pc1 and installing win 10. Is there a way for me to take drive from pc3 and put it in pc2 and have win 7? Both pc2/3 have preinstalled windows by HP. Thank you for the help.

PC 3 (Vista) to Win 7 will cost money. There is no free upgrade from Vista to Win 7.

You have a whole new PC.
You have Vista, or OEM Win 7 licenses
.
Budget the cost of a new OS into the new build.
This is like buying a car, and not budgeting for gas.

So I might as well buy a new hard drive for the new build? I'm guessing if you you switch a hard drive in an OEM windows computer then you can't get that windows back other than buying a new one right? If I just switch the drive of an HP pc and install windows and use the oem key, will it activate?

The physical drive is fine. No need to buy another one.
You just need to do a clean install of the OS, with a new Windows license.
