We used to have a BT Home Hub 5 and it seemed to work fine, stayed up for months with very little problems (replaced it as the port forwarding did not work and wanted a VPN). We have a few Ubiquaty APs and some computers on a wired network. The ASUS router is a couple of buildings from our main site, connected with a wired cable which goes into a TP-LINK gigabit switch which connects to a Ubiquity Poe toughswitch which runs the APs.

There is also a computer in the shop which connects to the ASUS router via wifi.

The problem we are having is every couple of days we have to reboot the router, we basically cant comet some of the computers (mainly on wifi but also wired) to connect and this seems to be the only solution.

What do people thing. Is the router knackered or is there another problem?

Ben

PS it was a used router we brought, in retrospect this may not of been the best iea;).

Hardware does get old and fail unfortunately. That particular asus tends to not have a lot of issues but it could be some tiny part that has been damaged over time by heat or whatever.

I would try a firmware upgrade first just in case it is software. You might find another identical router for almost free in the used market since many people just can't resist the new shiny toys.

From a usability standpoint that router will support most people needs and you generally don't need much more. That said 802.11ac router cost about the same as dual band 802.11n routers so you might as well get 802.11ac if you are look for a new device. Do not get suckered into anything faster than say 1500---ie 300+1200 unless you have end equipment that can use it and of course a internet connection that is fast enough.

Thanks. The Ubiquaty APs are only 802.11n, the router is only actually being used in the shop by a couple of tablets. Simply no need for ac. We could almost do without wifi. Planing on getting a replacement unless there is another we should consider. Ive always liked ASUS kit as it seems to work well and there routers seem to all get good reviews.
