Hi experts,

I recently made a 2 new desktop PCs with both the same MSI motherboard model and the same RAM. The only difference is that for one of the pc, intel 6th gen i3 is used and the other is intel 6th gen i5. Now I have already installed windows and applications on both. However, on of the the PC, I forgot that I need the i5 in it. So I need to swap out the 2 processors.

My question is, when I swap out the processor, do I need to re-apply the thermal paste? The PC was just set-up'd a week ago and swapping out the processors would take at most 30min- 1hour.

Thanks!

P.s. this is not a gaming PC. Just for office use.

Solution
Yes, you do. Clean and reapply.

When you take it apart, not all of the existing paste will stay on the existing cooler in a nice smooth layer. Some will stick to the CPU you are removing.
Clean off the CPU cooler, and apply new paste.

Since I will just be swapping out the two sets of CPU, Iám still going to use the same set of fan and CPU and moving them to the other PC. So it's technically the same fan and CPU set that was together on the originating PC. Will this work?

You have to take the fan off to unclip the CPU. You can't remove them as a single package.
