I have a very weird problem with an Asus Z97-K/USB 3.1 board. It wont detect a Samsung SM951 PCIe 256 Gb SSD in the M.2 slot. This SM951 module is detected by an Asus X99-A, Dell laptop and Schenker XMG U506 laptop. All bios settings are, to my opinion correct, following many board advice and Youtube videos. Bios Uefi, nor Windows 10 Uefi setup stick won't detect the SM951 either. I have been trying for a whole day to make it work. And getting desperate now.
When putting the SM951 in an PCIe M.2 add-on card on the Z97-K all works fine, SM951 is detected with no problem. Remarkable is that when putting a Sata M.2 SSD Samsung 850 on the M.2 Z97 board, this is detected and working. Bios version is version 0702. So why is a PCIe M.2 module detected and a SATA M.2 not!
Any help or advice on this problem is mostly welcome.

I have tried this option, no change, SM951 not detected, as if it is not plugged in the M.2 slot.

Putting the SM951 into the on-board M.2 slot makes it non detected. Putting the SM951 into PCIe M.2 adapter plug-in card makes it detectable. I dont want to use adapter card, since the M.2 on-board slot should work like it is ment to be. Otherwise, whats the purpose of an on-board M.2 slot when the PCIe nvme drive is non-detectable.
Curiously a Samsung 850 Evo M.2 Sata in the on-board slot is detected by the bios.

It may be NVMe firmware causing a conflict with the board's BIOS.

Step 1. Please update motherboard BIOS. If you already have the newest BIOS, flash it over with another copy.

Step 2 (conditional). If your BIOS sees it after the update, then congrats, you're done! If your BIOS still doesn't see it after updating, then please put your adapter back on so it can see it and then continue to step 3.

Step 3. Please look for firmware updates for your drive. If you already have the newest version, flash over it anyway.

Motherboard has latest bios version. Bios sees nothing.....
There seems no firmware available for Samsung SM951 SSD since this is an OEM drive.
Just tried with a Samsung 950 Pro Nvme M.2 module: same result with on-board M.2 slot: NO detection.
I think this motherboard is flawed and will never work with a Nvme M.2 put in the on-board slot.
I am totally fed up with Asus, I think I will switch to an Asrock Z97-Extreme6/3.1 and hope this will finally detect a Nvme M.2 module.
The more that an Asrock gets M.2 PCIe 4 lanes and Asus boards only at 2 lanes, IF IT SHOULD WORK, this is....
