Does deleting HDD in BIOS with a new system erase the files in it?

I bought a new cpu system and used my HDD from my previous CPU, a WD 1TB Green Caviar, as a media drive for the new CPU because I bought an SDD for the OS and apps. Now here's what happened, the tech guy who was supposed to install the OS and drives deleted the HDD during set up in BIOS which he claims was an accident as I told him I have files in that HDD. I asked if the files are still there and he said the files are gone. He said he only deleted it and didn't click format. I asked him not to touch the HDD again and I will just find someone else who can help me with it instead. Now my question is, if the partition of the 1TB HDD was deleted, are all the files gone too? Because I saw that the size of the HDD was at 930+ GB already. He said he didn't format it which I'm not really sure if he was lying. But I have only sat down for 2 or 3minutes after the BIOS opened so I'm thinking it isn't possible that a 1TB could have formatted that fast. If it was formatted, can I still recover the files??

Hi jmanzano17.

This is a really unfortunate turn of events. :(

Basically if he really just deleted the partitions, your data could still be recovered. Even if it was a Quick Format it's still recoverable. It's important not to write anything on that drive so that you don't overwrite your files. I'd recommend that you try your luck with data recovery software first: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm. And if that doesn't work you could go for a professional solution, such as a data recovery company: WD Data Recovery Partners.

Hopefully he didn't accidentally installed Windows on that drive and this is not the cause for him to delete the partition, as if this has happened it might have...

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes. Good luck!
