Which PSU is best for my GPU

Hi there. I'm in need of a new PSU. I took my PC in to the computer store and the guy said my PSU (Corsair gold edition 550w) has gotten weaker over time and can't power up my GPU. He says I should get get a 700w power supply.

My current hardware specs are:
Processor: Intel i5 2nd gen
RAM: 8GB
GPU: Gigabyte HD7950 (Cyclone 3 fan)
PSU: Corsair gold edition 550w

Which PSU should I get and what wattage will be good enough to prevent this waking of PSU power over time. My PSU is less than 1 year old and it used to work perfectly. The technician said that he tried my PC without the GPU and it worked fine and tried it with it and it stopped working. He then said her connected it to a 700w PSU my card and pc worked.

So to sum it all up, what wattage psu should I look at getting and what brand? I don't want something too expensive because I don't do serious gaming, I play games probably like 1hr a week max. Other than that I use my PC all day during the weekends (only shut down for about 3-5 hours) I mostly use it for Internet browsing and work.

Solution
Funny thing, maybe the card is broken t:lol: but probably some condensadora leaked. P = I x U could be thar the amperage is not high enough

The guy in the shop is talking nonsense, there is no way you need a 700W PSU for that build. The fact you were using a 550W and it was working before degradation took place proves that.

Your build could probably run on a good 450W PSU but I would recommend a 550W to air on the side of caution.

I like the EVGA PSU. The SuperNova G2 is a good choice

or XFX bit cheaper TS 550W

I quickly built a machine on
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator and 550W seems to be more than enough, how ever you should build your machine there again and see with the right components if 550W is really enough, you never know

Is there any way to really know if the PSU really did degrade? 100w degradation in less than a year is a bit too much. I did test the voltages and all seem fine. The problem I had was that the screen stays black. It wasn't hardware related because i tested all the parts.

Power supplies actually often have long time warranty, is your PSU not on the warranty anymore ? The problem with PSU is that there are some pretty big condesators and oder nasty components and without having a really professional formation you SHOULD NOT  open a PSU and try to fix on your own, those beast can accumulate enough charge to kill you in a second. if your pc is not going up and some one told you it worked with 700w PSU than just order a cheap good one replace the old one and check if it worked, if not than send it back and continue the search of your problem.

You could probably test the PSU with a oscilloscope and Multi-meter, but Im not yet far enough on my formation (still 3 years to go ) to even know how to use it.

I did use a multimeter to test the voltages and it all seemed pretty good. I just tried the PC again now myself with and without the card and the Pc worked without my card. With the card the screen stayed black and nothing happens.

The card does work. I tested it out on another rig. The PSU that I have currently can power up on board graphics and the PC works fine. As soon as I connect my card the screen stays blank and won't boot up.
