Hi, I want to overclock my fx6300 chip on a MSI 970A-G43 with a coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo cooler. it is currently clocked at 3.76 GHz and runs Minimum 20 maximum 40 depending on what im doing.

I am going to overclock it to 4.0 GHz and wondering if anyone good give me either a guide on what to change and what not to change and some helpful tips on what volts should stay lower then.

Solution
Here are a couple of guides.
Overclockers Club typically has owners club forums, where people post their OC results and experiences, worth giving them a look.
The general idea is to slowly increase clocks before hitting voltage barriers, then gradually increase the voltage as the CPU requires it.
You can tell when it needs more voltage when it crashes! ^.^
Here are some good guides.

The 970 chipset does support overclocking, and that board is perfectly fine for a light overclock to 4.2 GHz MAX, as 4.4 is the highest stable clock i've seen on this board. Given your cooler though I wouldn't go over 4GHz anyway due to the temperatures becoming quite high under load.
I would not recommend overclocking any higher than this due to the low power phase design and minimal overclocking capabilities due to being a budget board.

Fan blowing on vrms might help a little, but as mentioned above without a better power phase it wont do great. I replaced my old motherboard for that reason, but before hand i was able to get a bit higher without throttling with a fan directly on it. At the very least some airflow would disipate some heat and therfore prolong life a bit if youre pushing it hard. As a reference, i had my fx-8150 set to only 6 cores and it did 4.3ghz until i got my replacement (with a 120mm fan blowing directly on the vrms. Anything after that it would throttle the frequency and voltage down because it got too hot.
