CPU running too hot when idle and extremely high when gaming.

Hi, I've got a pretty old system now, with some slight upgrades over the years. I've got an Asrock Z63 Extreme 3 Gen3 motherboard with an i7-2700k (not OC'd) with a Coolermaster V8 at 100% fan speed. I recently got a new case (Corsair Obsidian Full Tower) to help with airflow, and it did wonders for my GPUs (Crossfire R9 280X). As you can see, my cpu is running quite hot even at idle. The max temp displayed is from some light gaming (Duelyst), however under a heavier load (Guild Wars 2), it reached a maximum of 96C.

I've cleaned out all the dust, but the only thing I can think of is possibly the thermal paste needs to be reapplied? I've had this system for about 5 years now and It's starting to some weird stuff, especially when playing a heavy game - it's frozen at least 4 times this week while playing Guild Wars 2, and it straight up turned off twice when attempting to play TERA (I assume the cores got too hot and the motherboard just shut the system down to prevent damage). Before this week, I never had any issues - at least none that I noticed.

Thanks in advance for any help.

you seem to be on the right track reapply some thermal paste after cleaning it from the old paste. while your heatsink is removed give it a good cleaning.

I imagine when changing cases you removed your motherboard by grabbing your cpu heatsink maybe it caused it to move and crack the old dried up compound.

Replaced the thermal compound and it's running a LOT cooler now, my suspicions were correct!
