I'm almost certain it's an issue with the brand including a terrible Wireless card because I've got two in my household and tested both upstairs (Where I use it). While the laptop I use does get slower speeds, they do both suffer from the distance and only get between 0.5 - 3mbps (Though my laptop did get down to 0.16).

While my room is the furthest away, my other devices are getting close to the full 17mbps advertised by my ISP.

My mobile phone which is of course a small thing and my desktop PC with a £10 wireless adapter.

Because this is very likely the result of Lenovo cheaping out (as well as including a ridiculously rubbish HDD), is there anything I can do to improve its ability to connect? I obviously don't want to be replacing anything inside because of Warranty and the fact that this laptop is a hell of a lot more tedious than it should be.

Thank you.

Well, I did update the drivers, but the connection is still rubbish. On average, in the same room, the laptop only gets 12mbps as opposed to my phone and desktop getting close to the top 17mbps upstairs on the opposite end of the room.

It does seem to be a terrible card in the laptop (Both laptops), so would a USB wi-fi adapter work better maybe?

This isn't an issue on a single laptop. This has been an issue on two laptops exactly the same and on essentially every laptop with the same adapter in it. It's definitely not a malware issue. Qualcomm seem not to know how to make drivers, I think.

Where is your WIFI access point? Can you move it to a better spot?

Download "inSSIDer" a tool that lets you look at WIFI signals (goggle it). It could be a neighbor is on the same channel and you need to pick a better channel. Could be that the Qualcomm Atheros AR956x or the built in antena is bad, that card is 1X1 not mimo. Either can be tested by using a $20 USB wifi plug in in teh pc instead of the built in wifi.

MAke sure that the access point is set to narrow (20MHz not 40MHz), you will get interference problems from the neighbors if you use wide unless you are out in the country with no one for a couple hundred feet.

Finally, 5Ghz degrades BADLY with distance. If you are using 5ghz vs. 2.4ghz then switch back to 2.4, that will help at distance.

If it were a neighbour on the same channel, then it wouldn't just be the Lenovo laptops suffering, it'd be all devices in the house. As previously stated, all the phones and my desktop PC are capable of reaching the advertised download speed.

Anyway, I just spent £10 on a WiFi adapter that is 802.11AC and backwards compatible at dual channel. Because I'm with shitstorm that is Sky, I'm only capable of using 802.11n at 2.4Ghz, but even then, this is a drastic improvement. I'm not waiting 5 hours for a page to load.

While I'm not reaching the maximum advertised speeds now, I imagine it's due to throttling as before, I was lucky to be reaching 25% the speeds my phone got, I'm not upwards of 90%.
