Should I upgrade to the GTX 1060 or GTX 1070? 1080p

Hey! I was just wondering if I could have some opinions regarding a GPU upgrade. I currently have a GTX 660 which is no longer capable of running contemporary games at 60fps (sadly) so I am going to upgrade.

I am gaming at 1080p, 60hz, and I would like to play new games on high/max settings for the next three years, at least. I am stuck between getting the GTX 1060 and the GTX 1070. The 1070 is far more expensive and I would have to wait for Gigabyte's mini edition to release to be able to fit it in my case, but it is probably going to be much faster than the 1060.

Which do you think would be best to upgrade to at this point? I was initially considering getting a 970, but the 10xx series has sort of nullified purchasing a card from the 9xx series at this point. Thanks!

Solution
The 1060 doesn't do SLI because two of them would beat the 1080 and cost 100 to 200 less. Go figure ;)
I say aftermarket 1060 aswell. This is a transitioning period: DX12 is coming out, VR is becoming a thing, all enthusiasts are upping their gaming res and NV/AMD are trasitioning to a new litography node. That means it's not the best time to be buying a card with the intention of keeping it for 4+ years. Probably the next gen wil be when they wii have ironed out both real world DX performance and this new manufacturing process. Just think about what Nvidia was able to pull in both power and efficiency with maxwell by optimizing their architecture ti the already 3 years old 28nm manufacturing process.
That's why i'm saying 1060 and not...
When looking to keep a card for 2-3 or more years it is best to get the best one you can afford. In your case the 1070. As games progress and need better hardware to run them at a stable 60 FPS having an upper end GPU will allow you more time before you need to drop more money on another one.

Now this is only my opinion but I do the same thing. I get a high end card and wait 3-4 years before upgrading in necessary.

That is what I generally do. However, I think I could get a 1060 and then in about 2 years get another? (SLI) Hopefully that would surpass the performance of a single 1070.

EDIT: I've just read SLI isn't being supported. That's a shame :(

your correct that the 1060's lack the SLI support needed. This was a bit of a shock to me as the x60 series has had SLI capability since the GTX 260 days. You are also correct that 2 of them would surpass the performance of the 1070. But keep in mind that not all games can use SLI plus there are draw backs to running 2 GPU's at the same time.

Okay. Thank you! If the 1060 is in fact around £240 upon release and if the benchmarks are as expected then I will probably get it. If not, I will get the 1070. Thank you very much :)

Any other opinions are welcomed, too!

Thank you all very much. It was hard choosing a "solution" because you all helped in my decision-making process :') I am going to get the 1060 a few weeks after launch if the benchmarks are as expected. Thanks again!

The other people here have give good answers but to be honest, only YOU know what your current and future needs will be. When I purchase a new card, I look for the card that is going to give me good performance 2-3 years down the road. I don't necessarily follow the "Buy the best card you can afford" rule. Why, because I can AFFORD a GTX 1080 right now if I wanted to get one, but I'm looking at getting a 1070 (IF they come out with a version that is at the $379 price point they said they would be) or a 1060. I'm doing this for a few reasons:

#1. I have a 760 so the 1060 will be a HUGE upgrade. It will allow me to play the current games maxed out at 60Hz at 1080p. It will also last me 2-3 years and then I'll upgrade again later.

#2. It's not worth is to buy the best card you can afford UNLESS you're going to be able to take advantage of all the power it gives you. By me buying the 1060 now, in 2-3 years from now, there will MOST LIKELY be a single card 4K solution on the market or damn close to coming out. At that point, I'll do a more substantial upgrade and get a 4K monitor (which will also be waaaay down in price), new CPU, and whatever GPU will meet my needs at that time. With 4K gaming still a "niche" market, VR in its infancy, and seeing how the new PlayStation 4.5 and X-Box Scorpio will affect the gaming market, it's just too early to try to play for the future. Buying something like 1080 would be a waste because I wouldn't use the power and by the time the items I mentioned earlier have improved, the 1080 probably won't be able to handle the high-end stuff that will be out 3+ years from now.

Like I said, it's really what YOUR current and future needs are. Everyone is going to be different.

Epicness937,

I HOPE. With Microsoft saying that the new Xbox Scorpio will play games NATIVE at 4K, some people thought it was a BS claim. If the Titan comes out and is able to play games at 4K with 60+FPS, then is makes it more of a realistic possibility that the Xbox Scorpio will indeed be able to do so. The one thing I'm also waiting for is to see what effect the new Xbox and PlayStation consoles will have on PC gaming and their prices. Many experts in the business are saying that the new consoles will NOT costs more than $500 because in the past when they have been priced higher, they did not sell well. If a console comes out and allows you to play 4K games at good frame rates for $500, it is going to shake up the PC market because windows 10 is already allowing gamers on PCs and consoles to play each other. You now have a console out at $500 that can perform as good/better than a PC costing MORE $$$, I think NVIDIA and AMD will have to readjust their pricing. For a gamer to get a console at $500 that can play games, play UHD blu-rays, surf the net, etc for the price of what a PC gamer would probably just spend on a GPU or CPU/Ram/Motherboard/case, things may get REALLY interesting come Holiday season next year.

The Same Question was on my mind..Since i wasnt able to clear up my confusion using others answers. I have made up my own...I selected GTX 1060 ...Reason to select 1060 are:
1-Its alot cheaper
2-Yu wont Feel bad when it get repaired after warranty period
3-Since it requires only 120W TDP(Less current) It ll heat up less resulting in longer PC & GPU life.
4-All Games Maxed out For now in 1080P 60Hz (>60Fps)
5-Not all future Games will require high Graphics(only about 5-10maxGames each year)
6-Out of the few High Graphics Game All are about 50Gb siize atleast .So hard to download and keep it installed since it require a lot of space .
7-Even after 3year only some games will require you to adjust to medium Graphics and almost all games will run in High Graphics 60Fps.
8-Only upto 30Fps can be seen via eyes( so yu can play High Graphics all games even after 2year if ur ok with 30fps,If not adjust to medium settings).Even all movies are shot at 24fps. Above 30fps The colours become vivid Or the game feel a bit faster till 45Fps...After 45Fps no change even though Graphics company says 60Fps as Gold Standard.
9-4k monitor doesnt bring as much change for money as it does for gtx660 to gtx1060 that to for a cheaper price. So its not wise to invest in it. Incase you plan to play HIGH Graphics VR Games buy TITAN X or atleast Gtx 1080 . But since in india Vr Headset not available yet(it will be about 50000rs if available). Its not wise to buy gtx1070 for future Vr use as in Future Its price might Drop. Buy what you require now and that is Gtx 1060.

If you Liked my Answer ...Please Select this as a solution

Your 8th point is 100% incorrect, the human eye can very easily tell how much smoother 60fps is to 30fps and the same from 60 to 144. I personally used to play console at 30 fps, then I switched to 1080p 60hz, now I am gaming at 1440p 144hz with my asus 278q. I dont think that we need anything over 144hz though. Asus is coming out with a 240hz monitor so we will have to see for ourselves if that actually makes a noticeable difference from 144hz.

Wasn't it beating the 1080 just a theory of sorts?

Obviously a theory, since one can;t test it. But the math says so.

Btw 2 1060 do not beat a 1080.
Were do you live? US or EU, if your on Eu and you want a full proof 1080 graphic that will be able to run all dx 12 / openGL / Vulkan go RX 480 Nitro + Beats the a custom 1060, and in some games beats it on DX11.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mHrGi9CfN8

I upgraded my GTX 970 to a RX 480 the sapphire Nitro + 8GB and i don't regret one bit changing to AMD (i was driven by price/performance), cause the price difference in my country between a RX 480 nitro + and a Asus or gigabyte 1060 was €50.

But if you just want to go Nvidia i suggest the 1060, nvidia dropped their profit margin to take on the rx 480.
If your playing at 1080 and want at least 60/100FPS go either RX 480 or GTX 1060.
