Which card is best

I have been looking at different AMD and Nvidia cards. I was waiting til the RX 470s come out to make a choice. I have read in a few articles( possibly by Nvidia Fans), that the RX 470 is a waste of time and that it can not beat a GTX 950 in pure power and performance. Does anyone know firm facts on the new RX cards and there performance against GTX 900s?

Solution

Until its out and you can tell me how many fps it gets in 16 games, performance is in fact **pure speculation**. As I said above, the legitimate comparison is the 470 versus the 1050. Might was well compare the 1080 Ti with the 390x.

- RX470 is a Polaris10 GPU like RX480, it has 32CUs compared to 36 of RX480, some other stats are known as well directly from AMD. It is safe to assume it is not GTX950 level.

Radeon 470 http://videocardz.com/amd/radeon-rx-400/radeon-rx-470

GTX 1080 http://videocardz.com/nvidia/geforce-1000/geforce-gtx-1050

We know as much about the 470 as the 1050 and what we know does not include gaming performance

No... at this point everything is pure speculation. Also why are you comparing current generation AMD cards versus last generation nVidia cards ? TBA = To be Announced = we know squat

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti TBA
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 July 19
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 TBA
NVIDIA GeForce GT 1040 TBA

AMD Radeon RX 490 TBA
AMD Radeon RX 480
AMD Radeon RX 470 TBA
AMD Radeon RX 460 TBA
AMD Radeon R5 435 TBA

I'm comparing the Rx against the GTX 900s, cause I'm looking to upgrade my GXT750. Looking to stay under 200 for the card. I can get a GTX 960 for 150 on Newegg, if the RX 470 is going to be better for gaming than a GTX900 for under 200 then I'll wait. If it is going to be basically the same, then why wait.

Why wait ? Here's why we're holding off our users:

The 1070 was faster than two 970s in SLI.
The 1080 was faster than two 980s in SLI.

The 10xx series jump over the previous generation has been rather pronounced. Not curious as to whether the 1050 will faster than two 950s ?

You have two companies about to drop cards ... AMD is gonna drop the 470 and nVidia is going to drop the 1050. I understand that you are going to wait for the 1st (470) to come out but not the second (1050) ? Did you follow the 480's tumultuous release ? We all heard the the 480 is going to be $199 and that and it is going to crush all things nVidia ... Then the reference 480 came out and what happened ?

-we had a power issue, that basically didn't mean much, .. well, after "the fix" except to affirm, just like the nVidia reference 10xx cards, that it is bad idea to get a reference card.

-you can't actually buy one for $199, cheapest on pcpartpicker has been $269.99 for quite some time

Then ... wait ... what ? ... leaked performance data shows the 1060 beating the 480 ? Oh crap, .. wish I had waited.

Until both cards cards are out, and out in non-reference form factors, we won't know how they will perform against each other. We still haven't seen any non-reference 480s. Non-reference 1060s will be on sale Tuesday.

The 470 had a 2nd quarter release date, they missed it. The 1050 had a 3rd quarter release date, we are in the 3rd quarter. I don't expect either card to drop till August.

Who will in the 480 / 1060 performance battle ? .... we don't know
What will the respective prices be thru summer ? .... we don't know
Will AMD / nVidia deliver non reference 480 / 1060 versions within a week ? ... we don't know.

Who will in the 470 / 1050 performance battle ? .... we know less than we do above
When will the 470 and 1050 drop ? ... we know less than we do above
Will AMD / nVidia deliver non reference 470 / 1050 versions within your decision time frame ? ... we know less than we do above

Right now, all we can do is speculate. Anyone who asks us to do a build for them, we are recommending that they wait till the answers are in front of us. I expect both AMD and nVidia are focusing their publicity machines on the 19th right now and i don't expect we'll hear anything till then. If nVidia is, as expected, going to trump the 480 with the 1060, then the best way to steal some of their fire would be for AMD to announce price cuts on the 480 (down to what was originally projected) and start making noise about the 470. I don't think you have long to wait, certainly by the end of the month.

I'll be buying RX470 myself, but I do not really consider GTX950 or GTX960- they are last generation cards. Now about RX470: minimum performance of the card is unknown, and AMD started marketing it as a power efficient design (2.7x power efficiency vs 270X) at 110W. You can calculate some speed estimation from that. Also, at AMD presentation few days ago in Australia, AMD representative said they are not going to limit memory size or other specs and let AIBs design cards the way they think is best. Information that it is a 32 CU chip is official as well. So now we have a chip that is similar to full Polaris10, but we do not know how much AIB makers push their models from power efficient AMD specs. Seeing overblown coolers on RX480 models, I suspect there will be some high clocking RX470s as well- but yes, this is all speculation.

I think you are forgetting, that on release GTX960 was junk compared to just a litle higher priced GTX970. By your analogy- GTX1060 is also going to be junk?
