Backup NAS that can disconnect shares during daytime?

  • Hi, I'm looking for a simple NAS to make nightly backups for a small business. Due to the rising number of ransomware attacks, I'd like to disconnect the shared valume from the local network during the day. That way, if a ransomware program encrypts all files, it cannot find the last nightly backup, at least. I assume that the ransomware will attack as soon as it's activated, and that should be during dumb-user-time aka daytime.

I know I can simply plug the NAS to a time controlled plug, but I administer that remotely, so I would like to have access to the web interface during the day.

So my question is if there is any NAS which allows for timed disconnection of shared volumes, well as a user option, or as a programming option, or whatever. We now have a WD MYCLOUD 3Tb thing, but it has not that option, as far as I can tell.

    Thanks for any advice.

Thanks :). I have tried your solution. The problem is that the NAS has to have another public share, and you cannot make two connections with two different sets of credentials, apparently. A dedicated NAS for backups could be a solution with your option, thanks.

Well, the problem with that is that I won't get remote access to the web interface during the day. I'm not that keen on checking things at 3 a.m. :)

He! They are rusty. And for rusty I mean they are still called Unix skills :) If shove came to push I suppose I could do that, or even directly use an old PC as backup NAS and program my way out of that. The entity of the problem is not so big for me as to spend so much time in it. I was hoping that some NAS had that feature incorporated, or easily programmable. Thanks anyway :)
