GPU wont clock higher than default clock

So i recently bought a msi gtx 1070 gaming x, everything is working perfectly but the clock, even setting the OC mode in the msi gaming app which (as stated in the msi gpu page) should reach 1607 base clock and 1797 boost clock. I tried overclocking manually with msi afterburner 4.3.0 beta (which is the only program that lets me adjust my gpu voltage, i also tried evga precision x e nvidia inspector), after finding a stable clock i click apply but nothing seems to change. In gpu-z is shown that my gpu clock is, in fact, higher than the default, but looking at the sensors tab it's still at the default 1582 (which correspond to the "gaming mode" clock). Since i read a lot of review regarding this card before buying it and everyone was stating that they managet to get it OC at 2000 MHz or higher i was wondering what my problem could be. I already selected "prefer best performance" in the nvdia control panel and OC my cpu(I7 6700k) but it's still stcuk at 1582 MHz.

My build is:
msi z170a gaming m5
msi gtx 1070 gaming x
intel I7 6700k
corsair vengeance lpx DDR4 2133
NZXT Kraken X61
cooler master v750

Update 1: Also I noticed right now that seems like that the OC on the memory actually works and the card memory clock at the OC MHz.

on NVidia if the card fails the overclock it will default back to stock maybe luck of the draw was not on your side this go round ??

maybe the psu ? don't look like too many happy campers here ?

msi only guarantees the stated speced clocks of the card not a drop more. any ocing is all your own risk

What do you mean by campers?

And when building this PC i picked the part for a total of 250W usage in the worst scenario excluding the gpu and picked the 750w, exactly the one you linked, since i never thought that these new generation would suck up over 300W and in order leaving some room to an overclock.

I'm aware that if it fails it restore the default clock but gpu-z still tells me that the gpu clock is different from the default, even tho it never reach it. The one i was trying to achieve was at least just 40 MHz higher than the OC mode.

Weird stuff is happening, now when running the witcher 3 it started clocking up to 2088 MHz even tho i overclocked it only of 107 MHz. I just don't understand, I guess i should've asked it more politely.

So the card boosted to 2088 MHz while playing The Witcher 3? That sounds perfectly normal to me.

Overclocking the card will only allow the card to boost higher so instead of a 1981 MHz boost you overclocked it by 107 MHz allowing the boost clocks to reach 2088 MHz.

look up nvidias boost 3 thing on theses cards see the bios of the card may be pre set to boot up to 2088 on its own

I'm sure this maybe whats coming in to play ?? NVidia seems to have more of a choke hold on OCing there newer cards

so the better your card the better it will hold a auto boost well above spec boost clock as the min guaranteed

so if your card is speced for boost of say 1700 and you get 2000 that's a good thing [I guess] some guys cards may do better some may not all your guaranteed is what MSI states in your cards specs as a min it will do anything over that out of the box is gravy

The strange thing is that it started doing it like right now, i changed nothing, i didn't even reboot. It just started working. The more days I spend using a PC the more i think it's pure magic.

you said in witcher you got 2088 ??

if you read the deal on boost 3.0 you see it may or may not need to boost you may stress test but the test may not trigger the boost fully ?? like the guy above said you oc a bit so that should boost to you oc ''only if the card is triggered to do so '' like witcher may call up full boost then something else or a nother game may not ??



I don't know looks like its now between you , msi and NVidia [more NVidia seeing MSI and all vendors got to do things the NVidia way ]

I have the Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming GTX1080 Water force and I can't get it faster than the lowest stock speed of 1759. Even when I OC it 1759Mhz is as high as the core clock goes. this is the lowest speed of stock standard. I keep hearing all these stories of people getting these cards to and above 2100Mhz, but this seems like folklore to me.

my core clock on my new 1080 keeps jumping up and down from 1330 mhz and 1633 mhz base clock when gaming. and for a few seconds jumping up to 2000mhz.
IDK WHAT TO DO
