How to fix homebuilt system randomly hanging

I have a homebuilt system that will randomly hang with the screen turning into a green and plaid pattern over what is currently being displayed.

The screen continues after reboot unless I remove the motherboard battery for five minutes and re-start

The build is a MSI MSI B150 PC Mate LGA 1151 motherboard with an Intel Core i3-6100 processor.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
