Hi,

Background/reasons:
I have been browsing a bit lately to get my desktop PC back in shape to play some video games.
I used to play regularly then stopped for last 4 years-ish. I played some strife 2 years ago (that was running ok) and then nothing again for more than a year now.
I've wanted to play again for a while and hesitated between getting the PC back in shape or buying a console. But now I'm quite determined on the PC :)

So the goal is to be able to play the current games in good conditions and the coming up games.
However, I'm not sure if the computer is really upgradable (without changing everything) so the few solutions I was thinking about (not ordered in any way):
1. upgrade PC for cheap to run current games (if that's possible). So I can look into VR equipments in a year or 2.
2. upgrade PC to run current games and coming up games (VR?)
3. start fresh with everything new?

Here is the template:
Approximate Purchase Date: oct 2009

Budget Range: for the cheap option, it would be about the price of a ps4 so up to 500$
For the others, I guess up to 2000$
I'm using $ as indication but I live in Sweden. I could buy some things from amazon UK and deliver in Sweden. I am also going to France end of August so I could buy parts there.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming. maybe some VR (if possible in the budget)

Are you buying a monitor: I would like to connect the PC to my projector (benq w2000) so 1080p.
But if it can support higher then I won't have to change things anytime soon.

Parts to Upgrade: whatever needs to be replaced

Do you need to buy OS : no (let's not count it even if I need)

Location: Sweden, Stockholm. I can buy from UK if it delivers to Sweden. I can also buy from any store in Paris and from any store delivering to Paris.

Overclocking: Maybe

What I have:
Proc : intel core i5 750
Motherboard : Gigabyte, P55 UD4
Proc cooler : Noctua NH-U12P SE2
case : Midgard, Xigmatek
RAM : kit dual channel DDR3, 2 x 2Go, PC3-12800, CAS9, XMP, Corsair
GPU : HD 5870
HD : WD 500Go 7200 r/m
disc : Samsung SH-S223L
power : ANTEC EARTHWATTS - 650W

When I looked, I got the impression that the recent proc are not compatible with my mother board. So I would need to upgrade both. The RAM seems to be outdated too (and I will need more than 4Gb). Not sure about the GPU but I guess if I want to run current games, I need to change it too.

So, what do you think ? Is it worth trying to improve or is it better to just build from scratch ?

Let me know if you have any questions.
