Graphics card max length

If my case supports a vga card with a max length of 290mm, won't it fit a 292mm card or is it that precise?

In the past (when I was a poor student) I upgraded my card to the latest and greatest. It didn't fit my case. I had to use tin snips to remove part of my HDD bay. It fit, and it worked. It just depends on how far you want to go. These days, I will tell you that I would not take tin snips to my PC.
