I had run into some money not long ago and decided to upgrade nearly my whole computer, except the graphics cards. at the moment i have the EVGA GTX 960 SSC 4GB and i planned on getting a second card for quite some time until now with the GTX 1070 released i was wondering if it would be smarter to invest for that card instead. When i checked benchmarks for both the 1070 and 960 SLI i could not seem to get a definitive answer as they both seemed very similar (ex. 2 different videos on each card both showed battlefield 4 running 110fps) and of course i am aware that not all games are optimized for sli, though i was wondering if anyone knew more specifically what the advantages/disadvantages of the two ways i could go about this would be. i will also post my specs below. Thank You for any help, it is much appreciated

ASUS Sabertooth Z170 Mark I
Intel i7 6700k
G.SKILL TridentZ Series 16GB 3200
EVGA geforce GTX 960 SSC 4GB
Corsair RM850x

a 1070 is about= to two 970s in sli and sometimes the 970 is faster at 1080p but at 1440p and up the 1070 is faster than a 970 sli and 980 ti and a titan x in games that dont use 12gb vram (almost every game) and two 960s is a bit slower than a single 980 meaning that as a 1070 is faster than a 980 ti and a 980 ti is faster than a 980 means that a 1070 is the best choice

Every benchmark I have even seen shows the 960 sli keeps up with a single 980, when the drivers support it. A single 1070 matches and can sometimes beat a 980ti. Given that, I can't imagine a scenario when the 960's would ever touch a single 1070. Also with the 1070 you have no sli support issues, less heat, less noise, and less power consumption. You also have 8gb of vram vs 4gb.

two 960s with 4gb will run 30-40fps at 1440p
a 1070 will do 60-75 max settings but you need two for 144hz i know as i got two :p
