Hi all,

Yesterday I went to turn on my PC and it did not boot past the "Starting Windows" screen, and that screen did not display the logo as it usually does either, this image is exactly what the frozen screen I'm getting looks like:

http://en.community.dell.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-wikis-components-files/00-00-00-00-18/4747.Capture1.PNG

I've tried and the BIOS still works.

I have tried system repair, which tells me the error 0x490 "No OS files found on disk"

It might be worth noting that genuinely nothing has changed at all with my PC from the minute it was working to this state. All I did was turn it off and now it doesn't work. I understand that this issue is related to hardware but I don't see what could've happened in the space of 12 hours in which nothing changed and the computer was shut down the entire time.

Today I've been using the F8 options, this is the result:
- Does not boot in safe mode.
- Command prompt chkdsk on all drives, all are fine except for E: drive which gets stuck on 58% progress on checking the indexes, repeating twice the line: "Correcting error in index $130 for file 2243"
- System restore does not allow me to restore and says that "The disk E: has errors, Windows has detected file system corruption on (E:) You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored" I then check the disk for errors and it says that there are no errors. It will still not let me restore after this.
- Last Known Good Configuration simply produces the same frozen "Starting Windows" screen.

I'm not sure what to do next. I really don't want to do a fresh install as I have not backed up my (two) hard drives and have so much data on them.

If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

what you can do if you can work out what files or directory ypu lost if you have access to another puter with the same files you should be able to copy those and paste them into your directorys as the files are already registered in the registory copy and paste is an option.

So is E: the drive with Windows on it? I'm not even sure but I'm guessing it's a partition of C: drive?
Do I need to get a new hard drive or just re install windows? I'm so lost.
It's weird that it just happened overnight too. The computer was literally working perfectly 12 or so hours ago.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Yes, get a new hard drive. E: is probably a backup copy of the windows install or some other type of backup. Your windows install that you currently have will not be able to be cloned or copied to the new hard drive, because of the errors. Do you have a Windows sticker with the Windows key on the sticker, still visible on your computer?

No worries at all.
My PC is now working fine, after using the command prompt to fix the E: drive (which wasn't actually stuck on 58%, it was just taking ages)
I also think I realised why this all occurred. I keep my PC in sleep mode whenever I'm using it, I don't actually shut it down very often. We had a brief power-cut in our street which obviously shut off power while my PC was in sleep mode. My guess is that I got unlucky and E: drive was doing some important stuff when this power outage happened and corrupted the Windows files on the drive.
Anyway, it's all good now. Thank you for your help :)
