I have a Gateway DX4300-21 desktop with a AMD Phenom II X4 810 processor SNDI# 01008727427 SN# PTG8302007010124EA2700. I need to replace the CPU as it got damaged. Any ideas as to which one would a good upgrade and if I upgrade the CPU, do I need to upgrade the bios, along with the power supply? Please advice?

Thanks,
GParra

The 960T can increase its clock speed to 3.4 GHz for moments at a time during high CPU load, but only on 2 cores at once (at work so I can't verify this 100%). The B99 stays at 3.3 GHz at all times (unless it gets too hot) so it's better at sustained performance and is the one I'd personally buy. The 980 would be faster, yes, but it's rated at 125W and will probably overheat on your current CPU cooler. If you're OK with buying a new cooler, then by all means get the 980, but the B99 will work with your current cooler.

Some possible options that require neither a BIOS update nor a PSU upgrade are:

Phenom II X6 1065T
Phenom II X4 960T Black Edition
Phenom II X4 B99

These are all the fastest processors in the 95W envelope in various ways; the X6 has the most cores while still having a higher clock than your previous CPU, the 960T can boost the highest, and the B99 has the fastest base clock. I lean toward the B99 for the fastest consistent single-threaded performance. These can be found for $69 on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Free-Shipping-AMD-Phenom-II-X4-B99-CPU-HDXB99WFK4DGM-3-3GHz-AM3-938pin-95W-6MB-/262497380701?hash=item3d1e10295d:g:iH8AAOSwGIRXaoaT

I inadvertently took the cpu out of its socket while cleaning.....pretty dumb move I say......then then I tried to put it back several pins got bent. One of the pins broke off when I tried to straighten it out. So, the CPU is damaged!!!

Thanks for you suggestions voltoid27. When you say that the 960T can boost the highest........what are you referring to. I play games on facebook and cruise the internet for the most part. Which of the ones is best for this: the B99 or the 960T? Also, would the AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition work without problems. Someone on this board had suggested the 980.

Please advise,

Thank you so much for your help and also getting back to me so fast. I will order the B99 right now. I will need to buy a paste to put on the CPU when I attach the cooler right?

UPDATE 7/30/16: I got the B99 AMD CPU and installed it with the artic silver 5 compound and my computer fired up like brand new. It feels faster. Thanks Voiltoid27!!!! Your help was great and very accurate!!!! A++
