I recently got the new GTX 1070 SC editon and when I was playing GTA 5 with it. I get 130 FPS on the highest possible settings. But after like 1 - 2 hours of gameplay I get huge lag spikes when I am driving around like it just spikes down to 30 - 40 than goes back up. Like it just feels a lot more choppier. Could this be caused by it being on my HDD which is like 3 years old now. Would putting it on an SSD help. Or upgrading ram?

PC SPECS
750w Corsair PSU
i7 4790k @ 4.6 GHz
GTX 1070 SC
8GB Corsair Vengeance
240 GB SSD
1 TB Seagate HDD

HDD, possible. SSD's help in hastening boot times and application load times though I think what's happening with your system is that the HDD is being put to sleep after the system thinks your system is idle. Can you verify if you're seeing abnormally high CPU, Memory and HDD usages while in game? If so then you could be a victim of memory leak which was seen on Windows 8. The solution to that is to reinstall your OS or perform a repair install.

You may want to monitor your resources usage before that 1~2 hour time frame comes around to use as a benchmark with your latter experience.

Have you also made sure your BIOS is up to date? As is with your drivers? You may also want to check your thermals since thermal throttling...

IF YOU HAVE 1070/1080 AND HAVE LAG DURING/AFTER YOU EXIT A GAME, OR IF YOU IDLE IN WINDOWS, I FOUND THE FIX. Most probably you'll use z170 or maximus mobo ... go to BIOS and activate Extreme Tweaking, and then go to GPU settings and set the GPU to default. It will fix the problem with random lag during browsing.
