I have a Gateway FX6860 with 8GB Ram, SSD HD, and looking to move to 16GB Ram. It appears I have SDD3-1600 ram, four 2GB sticks. I am an engineer and use AutoCAD and graphics programs. Occasionally I run out of memory.

Does anyone have advice for me? I may not have focused on the right questions, but in my mind, I am trying to resolve a few questions.

Scanning with Crucial, shows DDR3-1600. I am assuming that if I purchased -2800 that it may not be any faster, and may not clock faster than 1600.

Some show voltage 1.5 and some 1.65, Does the voltage matter?

There are many price ranges and brands. Would any DDR3 work? I see several 2x8GB kits, but assume I would be better with a 4x4GB kit.

I could select reasonably priced memory such as G.Skill Ripjaws X Series DDR3-1600 @ $67, or spend more to get CORSAIR Vengence PR DDR3-2800 at $205. I don't know that I would see a significant performance difference to to there.

Most have Cas Latency of 7 or 9 but I could spend more money and get 12. What is the difference?

Thanks you, any help would be appreciated.

1| You should try and include your prebuilt system's SKU number to help narrow down the platform you have inside that chassis. If that is not possible by any means, you can try and download CPU-Z and then paste screenshots of each tab here for us to give you additional information.

2| Is this the motherboard inside your chassis:

? If so then you're on an Intel H67 which necessary means that your effective ram frequency will be at 1333MHz but that is just speculation at this before you state the processor and platform's chipset.

3| If #2 is to be correct then no matter how high of a frequency you shell out on if...

3| If #2 is to be correct then no matter how high of a frequency you shell out on if the platform will not go beyond 1333MHz then your investments aren't worth while.

4| Can you include a budget for your ram upgrade? Yes you should be looking for a 4x4GB kit to max out your ram. It's rare but there are documented cases where populating each slot with twice the specified maximum resulted in a dead motherboard presumably from a blown out capacitor. If it's Intel gen 2, 3 and 4 then you should stick to 1.5~1.65v ram kits.
