I built this PC in May with the intent of gaming and, maybe, streaming on Twitch. Due to budget constraints, I went with an i5-6500. Everything had been going fine until a few days ago, when I put some strain on the CPU trying to stream and discovered that I have an overheating crisis in my hands whether streaming or not!!

- Idle: 50C
- Gaming: shoots up to 100C!!!!

Every other temperature is doing just fine. So I did the following in an attempt to fix the issue:

- Switched factory air cooler for a Corsair H100i V2.
- Cleaned old thermal paste, applied liquid cooler with paste it comes with.

Problem wasn't solved.

- Cleaned off thermal paste AGAIN, applied brand new Artic Cooler, reinstalled cooler.

Problem persists.

The cooler was properly installed, the paste is new... what else could possibly be wrong?! Is my CPU nearly fried or can it just not... take the heat? *wink wink*
(What I normally want to run: dual screens, Overwatch, Spotify, Chrome.)

Solution
I doubt it's fried, but it's possible that it came from the factory with a defect in how the heatspreader was installed, causing high temperatures. I'd return the cooler, and RMA the CPU.
I agree with ecky sound like a cpu issue. the h100 can keep my 125 watt amd temps under control your i5 uses less power it should be chill with it :)

just to check though when you pull the heat sink off does it look like it was a really thin layer of paste? almost see though the paste thin? if not mabe your cooler support brackets are not installed correctly. other then that again go with ecky soultion
