Games are running lower fps than benchmarks suggest I should be getting, for example:
Far Cry 3 - 40fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 60fps (2560x1440)
Dirt Rally - 35/40fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 92fps (1920x1080)
Metro: Last Light - 30/35fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 72fps (1920x1080)
Watch Dogs - 20/30fps (!!) (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 60fps (1920x1080)

^^^^^All ultra/very high settings^^^^^

Now, clearly, these are huge performance deficits across the board so it's not game optimisation issues. My drivers are updated recently, my CPU temps are no higher than 78C at 100% load, my GPU temps are 85C at 100% load.

What could be the problem and what else can I do to maximize performance?

Thanks

Solution
Also -

You are running slow ram in single channel. Won't make a massive difference, but maybe a few frames less than a system with faster dual channel.

You May want to reseat your CPU cooler and clean/put new paste on
Those cpu temps are too high. COULD be throttling (given software temps not always accurate, but I doubt it's throttling at those temps) - whats your gpu usage during gaming? Always maxed or dropping?

Like me u run ultrawide. That is 30% more demanding than 1920x1080. So if benches say 60fps, expect about 40-50. I have found this on most occasions.

WOW I must have had a major mind block when reading those CPU temps, I can't believe I didn't notice they were high! Thanks for pointing it out.

So the only fix for this is reseating the cooler and applying new thermal paste? Is it normal for this to happen after one year of heavy usage?

Thanks

Yes I do realise that, but not such differences in FPS like that, almost halving! Also, Far Cry 3, the 2560*1440 benchmarked 20fps higher than my 2560*1080 fps, so it's definitely not down to the monitor.

My GPU loads are 100%
