Hi everyone,
I'm having some trouble with my desktop; more specifically my CPU. I have an AMD Phenom 1090T processor which has been great up to the last year or so. I've been having some trouble with overheating. I left it alone for a while because I didn't have much time, but now that I have the time I went through and cleaned my computer. There was a ton of dust, which I'm sure didn't / doesn't help the situation. Anyways, I just booted up my computer and I found that even when idling the temperature shot up to over 100 degrees Celsius. I'm not sure if this could even be possible since I'm sitting here with the computer open and it's about 60 degrees Farenheit in my room, and the air coming from the fan mounted on the processor isn't even hot. Can anyone offer any insight into what's going on with my PC? Thanks in advance!

Solution
Depending on the type of TIM used originally, it is usually soft like toothpaste. Dry and cakey could indicate it is dried out and non-conductive (thermally) anymore.

I would try this, but the computer doesn't turn on long enough for me to do this. It either freezes or just completely shuts off. I was monitoring the temperatures rising extremely quickly in the BiOS.

Does it have the stock cooler or an aftermarket cooler? Because if you have the stock cooler, there is no air coming from the cooler. The fan blows down onto the heat sink.

Has the PC been used quite a bit? It might have dried out all the thermal paste between cooler and CPU. I'd start by cleaning the old TIM from the cooler and CPU, then applying new.

Also, is the fan spinning at the proper RPM? Might be the fan motor is dying, and not spinning fast enough.

Check that the cooler's locking lever didn't get flipped over to the release position along the way in the past.

Check that you didn't inadvertently plug the cooler's fan into the wrong fan header sometime in the past.

I was just down there working on it, and it seems there was a TON of dust on the heatsink, so I cleaned all of it out. I also just ordered some new thermal paste; is it supposed to be liquid-like at all? it's all caked on to the heatsink. Seems like this might be my problem.

Awesome. I think we have our answer. The paste should be coming in on Tuesday; I will update with the situation then.
