So the Samsung 950 Pro, SM951, and OCZ RD400 seem to be very different than other m.2 ssd's. But the actually performance seems more for bragging on synthetic benchmarks than real world results. Where does that leave the other m.2 devices compared to more conventional sata ssd's. Like a Samsung 850 evo which has a m.2 option. Which is better? Is one more reliable or faster? Thanks for any help.

The new nvme drive are way faster they get up to 1900 to 2500 MBs read and write . Disadvantage is m.2 drives only come in 250 GB to 1tb and the sizes in-between. Advantages if is a physical slot on the mainboard it self it piggy backs the PCI bus straight to the CPU way better performance . And recently thier actually starting to route the m.2 bus directly to the CPU to avoid bottle necking . Only available on certain boards. Another downside can be on older boards where the m.2 slot shares the PCI bus stead of piggy backing it can actually knock down the bus speed on your video cards specially when in sli . Some people with dual x16 mode sli reporting it knocks down thier cards to dual time 8 stead of dual time 16.

Recent updates are samsung git the 960 pro sizes com in upto 2 tb now and thier even faster . Ya need a x4 m.2 slot to fully utilize the fast nvme drives atm or get a m.2 to pci express adapter and need enough pci express lanes to fully utilize it
