Hello everyone!

Not too long ago, I posted about a bios update that seemed to go terribly wrong. Well, something else is afoot:

>Updated the bios on my Asus P5b Deluxe Wifi/AP (LGA 775) to 1238 (final version).
>After that, could only boot once per cmos clear, but would never restart, no error codes or beeps.
>I though it must have failed (after trying to re-flash it a bunch) and bought a new board with the final bios (brand new, same model).
>Had the same issue (one boot per cmos clear) so I replaced my EE 965 with a Pentium D 820 that I had.
>Boots fine, the old extreme edition must have been bad (or so I thought).
>Purchased another extreme edition, same problem.

New board, new cpu, same issue.

Could this new bios version be faulty with the Pentium Extreme Edition 965? Since I can get into the bios once per cmos clear, I tried turning off hyperthreading, virtualization, and the like hoping that it would let me restart once. No go. I am also unable to change the cpu multiplier. This seems normal since even with the old, functional bios the first time it booted up it was stuck at "auto" until the next restart. Defaults to around 3.2 Ghz at first. Loading defaults and continuing will let you boot into windows once, but upon next restart nothing happens.

What can I do?

Thanks,
ImperialGuardsman

P.S. I have already tried, on both boards, only using one stick of ram.

Pentium Extreme ED-965 requires the FSB frequency to be set at 266MHz. Because the processor uses Quad Data Rate bus the effective bus speed is 1066 MHz.

CPU is a 2006 model. It is outperformed by Core 2 Duo models from 2008 which have a lower price. The Intel Core2 Duo E8600 @ 3.33GHz for one.

Thanks for responding!

Yes, I know it is outclassed by a lot of other cpus, but this machine is my "Last of Netburst" machine.
I am unable to make any changes to the cpu (multiplier, fsb, etc.) on the first boot after a cmos clear. On a reboot I would be able to but, alas, it never makes it that far. If I cannot get it working I'll get a q9650 or qx9650, but i really want this old extreme edition to work. It worked before, just not with this newer bios and I am unable to revert back, unless you know of a way to do that (the flash utilities, be they easy flash or DOS) will not allow an older bios to replace a newer one.

I can appreciate you wanting to resurrect and get the system going ImperialGuardsman but is really worth Flogging a dead Horse. The platform is dead and you cant revert the Bios as you say. Throwing more money at a QX9650 is not worth the frustration (even if you could get one) and probable failure. Sorry to be so blunt.

Well, it's not so much a resurrection since it works with my Pentium D 820. The board works, just not with either of the Pentium Extreme Editions I own. That's what's bugging me. I'm going to keep this as my XP machine, but I do not know why this particular model of cpu no longer works, but another cpu of a similar family does work.

Got the q9650, and it works. Runs great in fact! This is my dedicated XP machine, so it is old and outdated, but it needs to be. Thanks for tagging along everyone. Now I have two Extreme Editions that will find boxes in the future.
