CPU overheating fix/permanent damage?

My specs are in the signature.
My CPU temps are suddenly at 78°C at 100% load, whereas when I first got the PC they were never higher than 55°C.
I believe this is the cause of my PC's poor performance in games, as I am experiencing drastically low FPS for my specs.

How can I fix this? Could this have damaged the CPU (the temperatures may have been this high for a while)?

Thanks for all help :)

clean the cooler of the old thermal paste, and fans of dust

and apply new thermal paste when you put it back on

Your CPU could be damaged, I've seen in a few computers where the CPU is faulty and causes crazy temps with no load whatsoever. So yes I would say your CPU is faulty, probably not your fault though. Get in contact with whoever you bought it from and see if warranty is an option. If the CPU temps have been high for a while there's no real way you could've known unless you checked the temps regularly so it's not your fault.

So if it throttles at 100C, I shouldn't be experiencing performance decrease because it's only at 78C?

For some reference, here's how badly my games are running. I've compared my fps to what benchmarks suggest I should be getting:
Far Cry 3 - 40fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 60fps (2560x1440)
Dirt Rally - 35/40fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 92fps (1920x1080)
Metro: Last Light - 30/35fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 72fps (1920x1080)
Watch Dogs - 20/30fps (!!) (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 60fps (1920x1080)

^^^^^All ultra/very high settings^^^^^

My temps are completely normal at 0% load, so I'm not sure if the CPU itself is actually faulty, perhaps the cooler is, or my thermal paste isn't as effective as first few months.

Will do tomorrow, thanks for the advice. This seems to be the concluding advice from a number of different people.

Tried it, framerates did rise with lower graphics. I have no idea what else it could be at this point..

What this suggests to me is that, if you're using the same hardware as the people you're comparing with, you're not running identical graphical settings.
