I just had a replacement motherboard installed ( the original failed, and the manufacturer sent me the same model as replacement) And the computer repair person got Windows up and running, but in the bottom right corner it says activate Windows and all of my license software like Microsoft office does not want to work. They keep saying the activation code is invalid and I need to register the product. I called Microsoft, and the only way to get the free Windows 10 update working is to reinstall Windows 8 and Do the Windows 10 upgrade again

Just goes to show that even using the same model motherboard, Windows sees it as a different one because the new board's ID number (on the BIOS chip) is most likely different.

Windows Setup uses this ID number to create a unique hardware ID in the registry for activation purposes. ID mismatch between new board and what's in the registry causes Windows to get in a strop - LOL
