Hey everyone,
I've been experiencing (seemingly) random shutdowns today. The first one occured while I was gaming, but I've since tried to just go to the BIOS, and the crashes remained.
By shutdown I mean that the PC turns off as though I had pulled the plug. What's maybe interesting is that, in this case, the LED on the motherboard indicating that it is powered up turns off. In addition, I need to switch off the power using the PSU switch, wait about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on for the LED to turn on again.
I will start by saying that there is a "heat wave" here in France. For the first time this year the temperature is above 30°C (85°F), but I've had this PC for four years and it has already experienced much higher temperatures.
The heat wave may be related to the shutdowns but I don't think so - I've been closely monitoring the temperatures of the CPU and the GPU and nothing seems out of the ordinary.
In order to determine if it was a hardware or a software fault, I tried to boot to the BIOS instead of
Windows, and the shutdowns remained.
I removed almost everything from my PC, except from the monitor:
- I unplugged the optical drive, the SSD and the HDDs;
- I moved the RAM sticks around, and tested each stick;
- I removed the GPU, and plugged the monitor to the motherboard;
- I removed every peripheral (including the keyboard, which was only plugged in order to get to the BIOS and removed afterwards).
I am left with only the CPU (Intel i5 3550), the motherboard (ASUS P8Z77-V LX) and the PSU (700W OCZ ModXStream Pro). As monitored by the BIOS, the temps were very good (CPU at 35°C and motherboard at 28°C).
I reckon either the PSU or the motherboard is the culprit. Fortunately, I have a "spare" PSU and motherboard (which are currently in my girlfriend's PC) to play around with.
What do you guys think? Is it more likely to be the PSU or the motherboard? Could it be something else (the CPU for instance)?
Thanks a bunch for having read me and for any answers you may give me!
Victor
