I would like to add a SD card reader/writer (which reads/writes several storage card formats and provides an extra USB port) to in Intel NUC. The problem is the card reader is suppose to plug into a 9 pin USB header on the motherboard, and the NUCs do not have this feature. So I purchased a 9 pin to male USB adapter cable. When I plug it in to my Win10 NUC, it creates 4 new "drives". But when I insert either an SD card or a USB jump drive, the 4 new 'drives' disappear.

The fundamental question is: am I wasting my time with the 9 pin to male USB adapter cable, or should this cable serve the same purpose as plugging the female 9 pin connector for the card reader onto a male 9 pin connector on a motherboard?

And I did check the wiring on the adapter cable from pin to pin, and everything seems to be good.

In truth, yes you are. You can easily accomplish the card reader route by purchasing a USB powered card reader instead of trying to go around the bush with an external to internal USB header to plug to a bay mounted card reader. I own a Transcend TS-RDP8 5 in 1 USB card reader and it's been serving me to this day since my purchase 6 years ago.
