Hello,

I am a little puzzled from the choices i have. I have a HP Compaq 8100 Elite CMT PC, its quite old but works perfectly.
prossesor: Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.3GHz
RAM: 8gb
and the built in graphics card.
so i wanted to buy a graphics card, i need to buy a power supply first; do I have to buy something higher than 500w or 500w is enough, if i will buy the new gtx 1070?
and will it work perfectly on my PC or should i build a new PC?

I do not have good news for you.

You're actually the 3rd or 4th person this week who wanted to upgrade a similar system's PSU. Unfortunately for you HP has a proprietary motherboard and PSU, the connections will not allow you to upgrade your PSU as they ar enon-standard and there are no adaptors available.

You can buy a PSU to drive your new GPU, run it externally and use this: www.add2psu.com but IMO its a bit sketchy.

That is your only option other than a full system upgrade.

500w should be enough. As for keeping your current machine or not, it depends on what resolution and refresh rate/ frame rate you like playing with. 1080p and lower is fine i think. Higher resolutions and refresh rate/frame rates may cause the CPU to bottleneck the card your thinking of.

If you are happy with 1080p i don't think you even need the 1070. Maybe look at the 1060 coming out shortly. That's what i am looking to buy for my PC, which is also older and similar.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. It limits you from being able to install a GTX 1070 (which BTW I probably wouldn't buy with such an old processor anyway it will bottleneck) as you can't install a better PSU.

Using that add2psu thing I linked you can, but then you will have an additional PSU outside the case, its not the safest thing but it will work. I wouldn't waste the money though (to put in a 1070) with such an old processor. You are better off saving your money and getting a new CPU motherboard etc.

I wouldn't buy either, as I said, old processor will be somewhat of a bottleneck, if that was your only issue they wouldn't be that bad of an idea, BUT the fact you can't connect either to your PSU or use a new PSU in that system tells me don't waste the time/money.
