Hi. My PC, cca 8 years old, shuts down randomly. It cannot be turn back on right away. I have to wait a few minutes, unplug PSU and plug it in.

It happens when under load but also while browsing web or files in Win 10. Temps of CPU are around 56C, GPU even lower.

Tried the paper clip test and psu works.

Removed all ram, one by one, problem is still there. Disconnected all but system HDD, still there.

One HDD shows 9% health, has boot on it, so I cannot disconnected that one but it has been like this for years.

Please help. What else to check before I buy a new pc? :)

Sometimes it takes minutes before it shuts down, played R6 Siege for an hour, so I think it is not related to any overheating.

Sometimes it happens in 5 minutes from boot.

Would CMOS battery replacement help?

Can PSU still be the culprit?

Thanks.

Mobo: Gigabyte, P35DS3R
PSU, 4yr old Corsair AX750
Stock cpu fan

EVGA supernova G2 you will not find a better built more reliable power supply. IMHO.
a simple fan will not ask enough of the unit to test it.

paper clip test is just to see if the power supply will power on. it is not a test of its ability to actually supply power.
I'm gonna call it the power supply. random restarts, insufficient current to start the system. both are screaming PSU to me.
is there another computer/power supply you could temporarily use to verify? swip swap testing

if the system is 8 yrs old a new CR2032 battery would not be the worst idea, but it will not be the cause of the current problems.

+1 for the power supply. Paper clip proves nothing other than that the power supply provides the lowest possible power to power itself on. The second possible culprit for would be the gpu. But in your case i think that the motherboard is a more likely candidate.

The problem is that with such an old system everything can go at any given moment. The fact that you can play r6 for an hour indicates that a component is in a semi working/ failing state. And a mobo has hundreds of components like capacitors.

Thank you for your responses. I inspected the mobo and dont see any problems with capacitors.

Unfortunately, I dont have a spare psu to verify if that is a culprit. Probably I will buy one. Or is there other way to test the PSU? Paper clip and hook one fan to it, keave it running?

What PSU brand would you recommend? I lost confidence in Corsair...

Thanks.
